What to Wear for Holiday Photos (That You Won’t Cringe at Later)

Holiday photos are one of the few times our outfits get captured…and then displayed for years. Mantles, holiday cards, family texts, group chats — those pictures tend to resurface long after we’ve moved on from certain trends. The solution? Dressing in a way you’ll feel just as confident about later as you do right now.

Color is the foundation.

Jewel tones, deep hues, and muted neutrals always photograph beautifully. Emerald, plum, navy, camel, and charcoal are flattering across skin tones and look elevated in print and digital images. You don’t have to avoid color — just choose shades that feel timeless. If you love prints, stick with subtle patterns or classic motifs so the photo doesn’t date quickly.

Next, think about shape and texture.

Cameras pick up on details our mirrors don’t. Structured sweaters, knit dresses, tailored trousers, and well-cut blouses all hold their shape and keep you from looking lost in fabric. Textures like cashmere, ribbed knits, faux fur, and soft wool create depth without overwhelming the frame.

For group photos, coordination is key.

Instead of matching outfits (which can feel forced), aim for harmony in color families — jewel tones, earth tones, classic winter neutrals, or black and metallics. This creates a polished, cohesive look without feeling overly planned.

And above all: choose something you feel good in.

Confidence is the most photogenic accessory you can wear. If you’re comfortable, relaxed, and happy, it will always show.

Let your holiday photos be a reflection of your personality, your style, and this moment in time — without the cringe factor later.
